REVIEWS: Day of Retribution

Day of Retribution
Reviewer: Publisher Linda Lane, owner of Stepping Stones Press Ltd.

“We chose to publish this novel for several reasons. The story line is compelling and drives toward a high-powered climax. The author's corporate experience exposes with reality and insight the cutthroat world of big business. The dialogue is so natural that the reader becomes a participant in the story. Essential background development of the main characters provides motive and understanding, without interfering with the forward momentum of the story. Overall, it is a potent novel, an incredible read that examines the forces that create who we are and what makes us that way.”

David Coleman, the protagonist, is almost too good to be true. Alex Carter is a complex character and a somewhat likeable villain. The reader first learns about him through the comments of others. Next, his background is presented, giving the reader an insight into the root of his character disorders. Finally we were allowed to meet the man himself. I liked the treatment of Alex. His obsessions and downward spiral were well done. The two corporate types (Landon Walters and Jim Hargrove) were believable and sufficiently devious and self-serving to portray today's cutthroat corporate culture. The lines between good and evil are clearly drawn. The execution scene, along with the hurricane, were exciting. I enjoyed the book. How about a sequel?

Day of Retribution

I enjoyed the character development very much. David was my favorite because he was honest and you knew where he stood. Alex was the most interesting because of his manipulative personality and because you never knew how he would react to the pressures he was under. I appreciated the fact that there was not the profanity that other books tend to contain and although there was violence, it was handled in a non-offensive manner. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being, "could not put the book down," I would rate it an 8. There are only a handful of books that I have read which have received a 10. You always hate to have a good book end and I really enjoyed this one.

The story is typical of this industry and the types of issues that can arise. The moral and legal ramifications of how corporate greed can occur were obvious and believable. The story is really about personal values, the choices we make, and the need to live with those choices. The story line moves along well, particularly with the development of each character’s role from inside their perspective. I thought throughout the book that the relatively short climax to the story was what most of the book would be about. But in retrospect, the way the story progressed was very appropriate because it was the anticipation that fed the suspense! All in all, I thought it was an interesting and suspenseful book.

I, along with the characters involved, waited expectantly for the crisis to escalate and actually happen. I don't work in a dog-eat-dog environment and enjoyed gaining an insight into the world of corporate ethics. I love murder mysteries, so I did not find the violence objectionable. The scenes that could have been offensive for their sexuality or violence were discretely done and did not need to be more explicit for me to visualize. My favorite character was David because he was moral throughout the trials he faced. Trying to figure Landon out drove me crazy, given his brooding personality. Watching Alex become totally psychotic as events unfolded that he couldn't control was also most interesting. The final chapters were especially riveting.

This letter is in reference to the book, Day of Retribution, and the pleasure of recommending this book to any reader. Day of Retribution fills a gap in Christian publishing-the gap between books just for Christians and secular books that do not acknowledge anything Christian. The book connects the reader with Christian values in a secular and dangerous setting. The characters are real and the situations, while outside traditional Christian literature, remain true to the setting. It built a sustained level of suspense leading to a climax that kept me up late into the night to finish the book. Weeks later, the book continues to speak about how we live in a secular world. I ask, "What would I do in a similar setting?" Pastoring a large church, I am aware of what connects with people in the congregation. This book will connect with Christians seeking to understand how to live in the ambiguity of the marketplace.

Day of Retribution
Reviewer: Chalane Coit, Vineyards minister

I found Alex to be the most interesting character because his life had become so twisted. The backgrounds supplied by the author show how the situations and activities in our early years affect who we are as adults. Weaving the backgrounds of each character into the story really was important in helping me understand the characters. The climax was especially well written to the point that I could actually picture myself in the crisis. I also appreciated the lack of offensive language, just proving that great dialogue and intrigue can be done in a tasteful manner. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one by Tom Trench.
